Embrace The Suck!

I don’t like the Liver King. He cheated by using steroids, then tried to sell the world an unrealistic vision of what man can achieve.

To me, he is a con artist that knew exactly what he was doing to get richer or more famous.

To his credit, I really liked one thing that he did.

Once a week, he would do an incredibly hard workout called the Barbarian. Every Saturday he would strap on his weights and get it done.

Not sure of the validity of it with all those steroids pumping through his body but it is the thought that counts.

I am a firm believer in doing hard things, daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.

This is my program.

1. Daily-

Something to keep the body tuned up but not overly hard, running, swimming, biking, surfing and Jiu Jitsu.

2. Weekly-

Once a week a hard effort. I call mine the “NUTZFIT” workout. It really sucks and I don’t want to do it every week.

3. Monthly-

This could be a long run or a race. Just anything out of the ordinary workouts or training.

4. Yearly-

The big once a year adventure that is going to take a few weeks to recover from. My event is the Maui Perimeter run. 165 miles of bliss.

Why do I do this?

As always, doing hard things is not about the physical aspect. It is a mind workout. When you don’t train your body, you start to get weak.

The mind needs the same kind of training. I strengthen my mind by doing daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly “mind exercises”.

The best way to open your mental capacity is to get out of your comfort zone. Your zone should always be changing because you should always be expanding it.

My weekly NUTZFIT workout has gotten harder and harder over the years because I would start to get comfortable in the same routine.

It must really suck and when it stops sucking, it’s time to make it suck again.

Every week I dread Wednesday mornings. On Tuesday night, my mind starts making up every excuse in the book for me not to do it. It’s a mental workout just trying to fight off my own excuses!

Same thing for my monthly adventures and definitely for my once-a-year bangers.

And that directly translates into real life.

What are you going to do when life gets hard? Are you going to man-up and handle business or are you going to make up excuses and blame others?

This is where my training comes in. It’s the reason for grinding the way I do. I want to be ready, and I want to be strong when the time comes.

So, get out there and make your comfort zones bigger by sucking more!
