When I finally think I’m getting to know what I’m doing, I realize that I’m still just starting.

This is my ego check. Telling myself that I’m not that special.

Because I’m not. I have no special abilities. I’m not tall, or extremely smart or super strong. All I got going for me is my wildly handsome looks… just kidding.

Seriously though. I’m about as average as can be.

I have learned to push myself into achieving more than average type goals many, many times in my life, through hard work, consistency and discipline, but that is just a matter of routine and choice.

Anyone can do what I’ve done. Anyone.

There is no secret formula to achieving the tiny goals that I’ve accomplished and that’s the mindset of how I keep myself from becoming too prideful.

I like to compare things to see where I fit but not in a competitive way. I try to downplay big goals and dreams to make them look smaller.

For instance, the first time I decided to run a marathon, I didn’t think about how hard it would be. I thought about what kind of people finished a marathon and compared myself to them.

Like the 80 year old grandma or the obese man or the guy that ran on two prosthetic legs.

Not to downplay their accomplishments, which were absolutely amazing, but to not give me an excuse as a man who is in relatively good shape.

No excuses. If grandma can finish the marathon, then so can I.

That’s how I look at the accomplishments I’ve achieved. I’m a nobody that has done something, so why can’t you go out and do the same?

And to further check my ego, there are tons of people out there who have done extraordinary things with way less than what I have.

And that’s the point. Whatever you’ve done, someone out there has done it better with less. And one day, someone will out do that person, and so on, and so on.

So my advice to myself is to always be humble.
