Things will break. There will be accidents. Sometimes my fault, sometimes not.

In 13 years of business, I’ve gotten “the call”, many times.

You can just feel it or hear it in their voice. “Hey boss, uh, we had an accident. No one was hurt, but…”

Then there’s a pause as you mentally brace for it…

The truck flipped over, the roller hit a fire hydrant, we dug through utilities, a tree broke the the window on the cab, the skid steer tipped over, the excavator got stuck in a trench. Etc etc etc.

Thank God no one has been permanently injured or had any major injuries through my company and I pray every week for safety and protection.

But something will break. Accidents will happen.

It’s a ticking time bomb. Sooner or later the bomb will explode.

What do I do in those situations?

Try not to freak out. Stay calm. I start making calls and shift all my attention to the emergency at hand.

I make decisions. Do we need a truck? Another machine, a flatbed, another mechanic? Do I need to call in favors from a friend? Are we blocking traffic? Is there road damage?

I start checking things off the list and just attack the situation.

Once we have everything under control, I start to figure out why it happened.

Was it my fault? Yes. If you’re the owner, everything is your fault.

I take responsibility for the mistake. Then I try to learn from it and take steps to not have it happen again.

This is a life long journey. Make a mistake, fix it, re-position to not do it again. Then go on to the next problem.

I don’t fear accidents or things breaking anymore. I believe things happen for a reason and that the God I serve is ultimately in control.

When things happen, I have to remind myself that God sees it and allows it. He has never let me down before because He is faithful, even when I am not.

I take comfort in this fact and remain thankful even when the world seems like it’s crumbling all around me.
