It doesn’t take very long to build a bad reputation yet it takes forever to establish a good one.

I think character and reputation go hand in hand but I’ve seen people with amazing character that have a reputation for some not so amazing traits.

For instance; A guy who is honest, hard working, smart, humble, generous and wildly handsome, (I’m talking about myself) has a reputation for getting angry and blowing up from time to time (me again).

I also have a reputation for being (a little) over confident and borderline cocky, (read “you’re a punk…”).

And lastly, I’ve been known to be just a little bit late (everyday). I’m blaming that on Maui time.

My bad character traits are not something I’m proud of. I’m also constantly working on getting rid of them.

I like to focus on the good stuff. So here’s my list, albeit a little short.

1– I have a reputation for being a Christian.

My company name comes from the Bible. It’s John 14:6. Jesus said “I am the Way, the TRUTH, and the Life”…

More than my reputation, being a Christian is my Identity. I could lose everything but through my faith in Jesus, I have everything.

2- I have a reputation for being generous.

This is what I’m most proud of. My dad is a great example of this. No matter how little he has, he is always giving.

This principle aligns with my faith and what the Bible teaches. That everything belongs to God.

All my talent and abilities came from him so I owe it all to Him. Giving away money, time and resources becomes very easy when you know the source of that infinite wealth.

3– I have a reputation for doing hard things.

Ultra running, extreme adventures, spartan races. I’ve been known to do something that seems crazy to everyone but perfectly sane to me.

4– I have a reputation for being a hard worker.

When you don’t have much, you have to rely on your ability to make things happen, most of the time on your own effort.

I have always been physically and mentally capable of making it happen with the amount of work required to get it done.

5– I have a reputation for having fun.

I enjoy life. I love my wife and kids. I love my friends and neighbors. I like hanging out. I can have a conversation with anyone.

If there is a BBQ and beers, I’ll be there.

I think that’s it for now. There are way more but I don’t want to brag about myself any longer.

Just kidding. Kind of.

You don’t have to brag about what you are known for. The people you want to impress will see your extra effort, so stay humble and grind.

Building a good reputation won’t happen overnight. It may take years. It’s also something that you can control the outcome of if you work at it.

Take a minute and think about what you have a reputation for. Celebrate the good and work on changing the bad.
